Well done to all of our wonderful class who took part in the athletics day on Tuesday the 11th of November. You all ran your heart out which is all we can ever ask of you !
We had some amazing results on the day resulting in 5 members of the class being invited back for the finals, I think this is a Rm 17 record! Congratulations need to be given to George, Donghyun, Tom, Abby and Shyla and we wish you well for the big finals day on Thursday 13th of November.
Well done for being the worlds best class ever to take on camp!! What a blast we had while we were at Ngamuwahine during the first week back. I've heard some cool stories and memories that may stay with you for a lifetime. Thanks for being so organised, self managed and positive through the entire week, you were all an absolute pleasure to spend the week with. I look forward to hearing your camp reflections in your homework this week.
If you took any photos while at camp, and get them printed, we would love to have our photo wall expand on the back wall :)
....and next weeks for the extra organised people out there....just a short one this week as it is a short week at school compliments of labour weekend and then the Ultimate relay on Friday.
And for those of you who lost your readings sheets....
Homework - Term Three
Computer Virus alert !!!
I'm sorry to say that Mrs Hunter received a virus through an email today( or possibly last week). As a result everybody in my contacts list has also been emailed a message today ( Tuesday 16th Sept) that if opened could infect your computer. PLEASE do NOT open the email - instead, delete it without opening it and then you will be fine and it will not be able to access your contacts list. Sorry everyone!
What a busy term it has been....but then they always are in Totara House :)
Well done to all of those people who took part in the AIMS games in week 8, a huge commitment to your sport and some amazing results were had. T.I.S remains the top sporting school in NZ for another year!!

Those of us who remained on the school site were involved in some pretty exciting projects such as the Fair Go Kids Ad Awards and we have posted some of these on you tube at the following links :( you will need to copy and paste these)

The following is this weeks homework sheet which is to be completed only by those people NOT doing the Primary Research Project. It has been a while since a homework sheet has been posted here compliments of trialling the Education Perfect website for a couple of weeks and then having AIMS games( hence, no homework) so try to get your old habits back and plan out your time accordingly....a total of 2 hours over the course of a week.
Those of you who are competing in the Primary Research Project - Good luck! You have two weeks to complete your booklets online. Remember to go through your booklet and determine what the best answers are before logging on......you can check that your answers have loaded after you've submitted them by logging back in and seeing the answers in there. Try to have all answers submitted by next Wednesday( the 24th of September) incase you have any online issues...that way they can be sorted out before the Friday deadline. Best of luck - especially to those of you who are having a reduced timeframe compliments of overseas travel.
I have also attached our "Dream Home' project that you are working on , in pairs. Make sure you are up to date with your responsibilities and showing off your self management skills :)
Science fair
We made it to the end of science fair and lived to tell the tale.
Well done to the entire class for their awesome efforts with Science fair this year. As we have all learned it is a steep learning curve...we have learned not only about the processes of science and technology inventions, but learned a lot about ourselves a long the way, like the need to not procrastinate :)
A special congratulations to the seven people who were awarded a yellow dot from Mr Marsh and in particular to Thomas and Josh who were both awarded Silver medals for their exhibits. Further to this, Thomas also won the IPENZ award for his Cordless Net Gun. Super work team !!!

Below are a selection of some of our best ones...
Term Two
.....and congratulations on your efforts with FPS last term. Your superb work earned us a first placed booklet, a second and a third. What a fantastic start !!
The Dust storm of the 1930's was a major environmental issue, and worth us taking a look at while studying Desertification. Use the following websites to help you synthesise information from a range of sources. You will need to fill in the chart 'Natural vs Manmade'.
Our next step is to look at our Future Scene - this will happen on Tuesday of Week 4.
We will read the Future Scene a couple of times, then as a group try to identify some potential challenges. The following is a guide to help you write awesome challenges....I wonder what categories you will be able to find challenges for. Remember we want as many categories as possible. The attachments below should help get you started.
How many categories do you think have been used here?
Maths: Monday 26th of may
Red: W.A.L.T find minimum and maximum measurements. http://nz.ixl.com/math/year-8/precision then, measuring task in class to set maximum and minimums.
Tuesday 20th May - to be completed after your set in class work !
Maths - Blue group - W.A.L.T convert metric units. Myimaths - tauranga- square.http://www.myimaths.com/tasks/library/loadTask.asp?title=conversion/conversionOH&taskID=1061
Red Group- W.A.L.T use maximum and minimum measures for accuracy- myimaths. This game is not related to your WALT exactly but a fun 'who wants to be a millionaire' maths game related to measurement. Only to be completed when you have finished your worksheet in class!
Green Group- W.A.L.T find the area of rectangles and parallelograms. Myimaths.
http://www.myimaths.com/tasks/library/loadTask.asp?title=areas/parallelogramareaOH&taskID=1108
Our FPS topic this term is Desertification - the changing of the environment into a desert like state.
The following is a list of websites that you can go to to try and find information to your many questions such as; what exactly is desertification? What causes it? How does the soil play it's part? What are humans doing to make the issue worse? and most importantly, how can we help? Please note these are not set as links and you will need to copy and paste them into the URL box.
We have also started Science fair now and we have some awesome ideas out there of what to create and what to test in an experiment. Remember to set up your google doc and keep Mrs Hunter 'in the loop' so you can get constant feedback and feedforward. I have re-posted the timeline here so you always know what you need to have handed in and when...
Here are the wonderful Room 17 !!
This weeks homework sheet, due on Monday of Week 3.
Don't forget that if you are currently working on a science badge you can negotiate with Mrs Hunter to complete a two star(**) activity instead of one of the above questions. This needs to be negotiated BEFORE you start working on it !!
Great to see so many people from Room 17 entering the swimming sports on Monday the 3rd of March - good luck to everyone who is competing. It's awesome to see such fantastic team spirit and pride in your House already !!!!
As such, weeks 5's homework is much smaller (in time to complete ) than usual. This will allow our lovely swimmers ( all 15 of you...that's right, half the class) to still be able to meet your homework commitments for the week even though you are receiving it a day late. Just remember, because I won't see you on Monday morning to hand your homework in for this week before you leave, you can hand it in on Tuesday and still be eligible for that elusive double tick :)
I look forward to hearing all about your fabulous day ......enjoy it !!
Who will be the first one to find Mrs Hunter's spelling mistake on the above homework sheet and tell me about it ??? There might be a sweet treat for the first person to email me about it...
Maths - Tuesday 11th of March
Red/Green group
http://www.myimaths.com/tasks/library/loadTask.asp?title=accuracy/INTdecimalplacesOH&taskID=1001
The following homework sheet is for two weeks. Please note that it is a relatively small one as lots of little things will pop up over the next two weeks that you will need time to complete. For example: On Tuesday or Wednesday night you will need to book in a time with Mum/Dad and talk them through the work you've been doing in class. This is in preparation for your Learning Conference on Thursday.
Don't forget to share your successes with us all too by sending Mrs Oliver or Mrs Hunter details of the event and a picture......be proud of what you achieve!
