Surveillance Power

So far this term we have been exploring the idea of a Surveillance Society. It seems that everywhere we turn there is some system or technology that is tracking, monitoring or watching us. With the claim that there is 6 000 000 CCTV cameras in action in the United Kingdom and that the average person is captured approximately 300 times per day by these same cameras, it is timely that we investigate what systems of surveillance are in use.

Comment below by discussing a different surveillance method. You must include information about the positive uses of this surveillance, the negative uses and the possible challenges that may occur.

  1. Usage of CCTV(Closed Circuits Television) is one of the most common manner of surveillance.
This piece of surveillance technology helps the police to solve crime much quicker and more effectively. However, due to this CCTV every person in UK get shown in the CCTV approximately 300 times a day and there is 1 CCTV per 11 people in UK.

  2. Mobile phone surveillance helps authorities track peoples' positions accurately. This method could help to find criminals or track down people in areas with limited access. Consequently, your privacy could be risked if this information was lead into the hands of unauthorised people as they could stalk you. Many challenges with this method could occur, such as: Stalking, hijacking people, finding meetings or groups that could be of interest to criminals.

  3. Home equipment being used for surveillance. This would help find and track down criminals by being able to see what your doing at home. This would not be very creepy knowing that the government is watching and listening to conversations.

  4. COMPUTER CAMERAS. This is 1 of the many ways to watch people and locate them or what they look like. For example, if expensive items get stolen, like a laptop. People can access, using the computers cereal number, the laptops front camera to see who took it.

  5. Sousveillance is the recording of something by someone with a portable device. This could be a negative thing or a positive thing, depending on what you were recording. However, it would seem quite creepy if someone was watching you without you knowing.

  6. stingrays are a portable device that act like a cell tower and are capable of gathering data on nearby cell-phones or locating a single phone even if it isn't currently being used or is making a call. A good thing about these are that they can track crime that is going on from a cell-phone from quite a while away, but a bad thing is that cellphones that they pick up may be innocent of crime and the stingrays may be invading on their private things on their phone such as texts, snapchats etc...

  7. Hijacking your mind.
The U.S.military would like to legally hijack thier prisoners minds. Making them think only happy thoughts. The downside to this is that if not done right is extremely dangours and could damage important information that may be hard to replace; family information, addresses ect. However if done correctly could stop wars from accruing and save many lives.

  8. Phone Hacking
Believe it or not the government can hack into your phone at any time with out your permission!
They just have to find your number and they're in.
They can read you're text messages, listen to your recent phone calls and look through all your history. This has negative and positive impacts, whilst solving crimes or finding a criminal by looking at their messages, if the person is innocent that means you're breaching their privacy. There are way to not be hacked such as taking the batteries out of you're phone or using apps that have been created to stop hacking. But why should we have to do this? this is breaching our privacy in many ways and we have to use some silly way to stop it. Something should be done about this.

  9. Drones/Unmanned aerial vehicles
Law enforcers have already started to use unmanned aerial vehicles or drones to survey entire cities by getting into every nook or cranny or simply zoom in on a milk carton label from 60,000 feet away. Fitted with not only cameras, but wifi crackers and fake cell phone towers which could intercept your calls or texts and gain personal information without your permission. They can also be fitted with non-lethal weapons such as firearms with fake bullets or a taser gun.
